I thought that Miss Grey put together a well written tale of a seventeen year old girl Named Nicole Hawthorn. Her mother and father want her to fit in with high society and marry her off to one of the most eligible bachelors in all of London, whom Nicole does not fancy. That's when she meets him as he looked through the window of her home as she had her debutante ball.

OM's knowledge of the workings of London in the late 19th Centrury along with the Steampunk genre work to weave a masterful piece. This book was hard to put down once I started. I really loved the book through and through. Miss Grey has a way of making the reader feel as though they are on this very same journey with Nickie Nick.

I hope in the future she returns to Nicole's outings as The Protector and Vampire Hunter along the streets of London. I want to know what the next adventure is. Can't wait for the second book in this series.

It is a good YA novel set in a combination Steampunk horror universe. A heroine who is strong without having to be over the top strong like too many other strong female characters. Sorry this is a problem I tend to have with both Buffy and Anita Blake. Great supporting characters and a fun story
And who is available to solve those problems? Seventeen year old Nickie Nick and her more personable version of the Baker Street Irregulars. This introductory story is a lively and well constructed combination of Steampunk, Witchery-pokery, Mad Science gone horribly wrong, and naturally, parents who just don't understand their Nineteenth Century teenage daughter. This is a fun story suitable for any age.
I have to admit the mere whisper of vampires can give me a twitch these days and if a teenager is tossed in, I can come close to racing in the other direction at top speed. I had completely given up on the joy of the genre until The Zombies of Mesmer. This delightful novel has everything that Buffy once had at the peak of her game-- and in a prim and proper corset.

That's right, not only a slayer, a steampunk slayer. I am in heaven.

Grey has crafted a novel with utmost care that has many of the (now) genre specific ideas of steampunk seem so real that a reader who is not a fan of the genre will find themselves comfortable. On the other hand, hard core readers of steampunk will find much to love here as well.

Our heroine, Nickie, gets one of those Special birthday gifts. The ones that no one mentions because, well, they really aren't that much fun at first. Her gift? She is the Protector, specially gifted to protect the world from evil--specifically vampires which are generally (and thankfully) evil. With the help of her faithful nanny--who just happens to be a witch and assigned to train her when the time comes--Nickie begins to discover her place in this new world. Backing her up are a ragtag group of street urchins and a hero that I approve of for a change, really approve of. And, oh yeah, Nickie faces not just simple vampires and werewolves but an evil genius intent on world domination.

It's brilliant. It's fun. The heroine is tough enough to take it, but still a girl which is just awesome. She kills vampires and other nasties while wearing a corset!. If The Zombies of Mesmer is the future of the genre (and can I say a pretty please to the universe for that?) we are in for a treat. This has everything a book can offer and a bit more, except sadly, it ends. I think the author just forgot to add another three hundred pages so I wouldn't have to wait around for another volume. Hurry! Write more! Your fans are eagerly waiting and I might well swoon, if not downright expire, from the wait.
I feel in love with Nickie's character on the first page. She is smart and spunky, with a dash of funny snarkiness thrown in. All the other characters are perfect, both her allies as well as her enemies.

As she discovers her new powers, she is quickly thrown into danger, fighting vampires on the dark streets of London. But when a young boy is kidnapped by a non-vampire villain, she and her friends go on a rescue mission that takes them into an insane asylum.

From there she is reaching to save all of London from a sinister plot. The suspense never lets up until it's final conclusion.

I highly recommend this book for readers of all ages.
What a delightful book! Nickie Nick has a wonderful personality, with just the right amount of wit, sarcasm, attitude, and compassion to be an endearing heroine. I look forward to reading more of O.M. Grey's books!
The topic of Mesmer fascinates me greatly. Vampires and Mesmerism? Yes, please! This was a page turner for me, I could not put it down.
