Freya 800AD Viking era edition by Jean Mead Literature Fiction eBooks

Freya Sigvat lies awake in the longhouse dreading the coming day. The thought of her husband leaving for the wide open sea in his precious longboat is breaking her heart. Perhaps the next time she hears his voice will be in her head. Mead takes her readers back to the time of the Vikings, a time of hardship and restrained emotions, a time of war and heroes, where tenderness doesn’t belong. It’s easy to conjure scenes of ‘dark crests rising out of thin mists’ - slopes a myriad of greys, lilacs and blues and a dark peppering of oak and pine trees. You can even smell the smoldering moss of the fire and the honeyed mead.

Old Unnur has the ears of the gods and she can see into the future. With a good cup of mead she’s a hearty companion with a sharp mind full of memories. But Freya’s mind is hardly on the mead or the warmth of the fire. She thinks of Olaf, feels the pull of his spirit. Olaf’s thinks of battle, holding his sword high over his head in the excitement of it all. My senses warn me his return will be anything but ordinary. Will these men conquer those far off lands? What plunder will they bring back?

Each chapter is laced with intrigue and when one danger is past, another slams full force into the community. There is no doubt this book has been well researched. It is poetically written, movie-worthy and one that will take you on an exciting journey providing a marvelous window into Norske society.

Freya 800AD Viking era edition by Jean Mead Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I enjoyed this book because I love historical fiction that has an excellent storyline.
I will continue to read the full series.
This story held my interest. The writing was believable and the characters authentic. I loved the ending, nothing I suspected.
Well written, engaging characters (especially Freya), no dull parts of the story to drag yourself through. The story of a Viking woman's life, love, determination and strength.
Frey shows where the real strength lies in this patriarchal society. She does not have the power to make decisions for her family but has the strength to carry on when those poor decisions impact her life and that of her village. She shows great courage when there is the need to live separately.
Freya 800 AD takes us into the world of the families of the men who were the Vikings and conducted the ferocious and terrifying raids on the British Isles. I was immediately drawn into the story because of this unfamiliar perspective. I've read books and stories that tell the tale from the viewpoints of the raiding Vikings and the viewpoints of the warriors defending the islands but never from the POV of people left behind by the raiders. I have wondered in the past how they coped, worrying that the men they loved might die, be wounded or simply never return. I had also wondered how they dealt with the knowledge that the men they loved were also murderers, thieves and rapists.

Jean Mead does not shy away from these issues and deals with them in a straightforward and realistic manner. I appreciated the frank way the author dealt with the issues of the time - everything from disease, to violence, to crime in a way that gives the modern reader insight into the lives of these people. The characters are rich and complex, especially Freya. I was drawn into their lives and hungry for more. The detail provided by the author about the time period enhanced the story greatly.

I felt the ending was a bit abrupt. As so much of this story involves Freya's relationship to Olaf, I wanted more detail at the end. But that is really my only criticism. I highly recommend this book and hope there will be a sequel.
I have always been interested in Viking culture - this book really appealed to me. Freya is a very human heroine, sometimes speaking without thinking, sometimes doing things impulsively. She is, however, a loving, kind and moral woman. Her husband Olaf departs on a Viking raiding voyage to the land of the Picts and she is bereft without him.

The adventures Freya experiences when she determines to follow him to the land of the Picts (Scotland) are exciting and illustrate Freya's strength and bravery.

When I finished reading, I found the characters still inhabiting my imagination. I hope fervently that this is just the first of a series. More please!
This is a really captivating tale. It is a wonderful period piece which shows the vikings lifestyle in great detail. As a history lover and Viking descendant, this book appealed to me greatly. As an avid reader and writer myself, I found the story well written and wonderfully structured.
I really loved the author's descriptions of sailing and the emotional content of the various characters. I enjoyed how she displayed such a vast array of personalities and I really felt a great deal of compassion for the main character, Freya. I definitely recommend this book to all those who like historical fiction or can't seem to get enough of Vikings!
