This is the third time I have read the series. Bunch's books combine the elements of character and action. His universes are well built, imaginative without having to create extreme explanations to cover holes, and the story lines are thorough and internally consistent. A soldier himself, he covers military tactics and weapons well, glorifying but also with a dark humour. The Last Legion series is particularly creative in how the stranded forces deal with the separation from the rest of civilization. All in all an enjoyable read.Tags : The Last Legion [Chris Bunch] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. 1st edition 1st printing paperback, new In stock shipped from our UK warehouse,Chris Bunch,The Last Legion,Orbit,184149626X,Fiction,Science fiction

good action great character development you care about the people of the stories I would recommend this to anyone you will enjoy it
If one likes space opera , this is a good series, then it has other good points. I enjoyed the series.
very good battle scenes and well developed characters. I look forward to reading more of this author's works and any sequel to this one.
Old fashion sci do military story with a pretty good story line. Characters were believable and connectable thereafter. Easy to read and enjoyable.
I expected much better from the author. Will not buy the rest of this series.
This book is based on some hoary cliches, among them a collapsing human space empire, military rookies, and military brotherhood. However it is bolstered by interesting characters, a complex story line, fully realized cultures, and menacing aliens. There is also a bit of male chauvinism -- the description of female characters invariably includes their breast size -- and the usual obligatory sex, but there are some strong female characters as well, and not just tokens either. Unlike a lot of military SF, it doesn't include what I call "milporn," loving descriptions of weapons and their operation, all of which is generally totally unnecessary padding, impeding the action. There are also no black and white moral stances; everyone has some points to make in a real universe of gray hues. Well worth buying and reading, and I look forward to the rest of the series, with a bit of sadness knowing that Chris Bunch is no longer with us.
I initially read this book, part one of a series, in paperback a few years back, and decided to grab the version recently, as most of the authors I concentrate on are currently out of new material. The book is definitely still enjoyable the second time around - it's been long enough that I've forgotten all but the overall outline of the series- but while the characters and story are still enjoyable, it's a bit too much like many recent movies have become to give it 5 stars - a bit too much jittery hand-held camera and fast cut edits, but in a book rather than on screen.
