Let me start off by saying that thankfully this one was more like ‘Thirteen Minutes’ than ‘Behind Her Eyes’ as I don’t think I could have coped with another impossible, outside-the-realm-of-possibility ending. Once was clever, albeit weird, but twice would’ve been over-the-top. This isn’t very eloquent, but I loved, loved, loved this one. There I was thinking I was so clever – that I’d guessed at least some of their secrets, but I was for the most part way off base, and the one’s I thought I knew, well let’s just say were just the tip of the iceberg. So good, I’m still reeling.

All the characters were well written and multi-layered, but Sarah Pinborough really does have a knack for writing realistic teenagers. Just like the girls in ‘Thirteen Minutes’, Ava and her friends display the insecurities, risky behaviour, and mood swings you expect from young adult characters, although for dramatic purposes their behaviour is of course more extreme than in real life.

I have to say it really annoys me when the book blurb gives too much away, and it seems to be a trend that’s on the rise lately. Ava doesn’t save a boy from drowning until 29% of the way through the kindle edition. Why on earth was it included in the summary?

A must-read for fans of this genre.

I picked this book up based on a recommendation. To begin with, I didn't think I'd get through it. Why? Because it's told in present tense, a style of narration I repeatedly struggle with.

However, due to the rec, I pushed through and boy am I glad I did. Once I warmed to the authors writing style I found myself deeply immersed in this interwoven plot. Its told from a number of point-of-views but there's no head hopping. There are also flashbacks from present day to 1998.

Toward the end, I figured out a crucial plot point before the reveal, but it didn't detract a single thing from the story, only confirmed my suspicions.

If you're after a gripping read, and don't mind present tense, you can't go far wrong by grabbing a copy of Cross Her Heart
This book started off great; so much so that I had a hard time putting it down, but midway thru the constant "then and now" technique got tedious and I craved some solid facts and forward movement. I ended up not finishing the book.
Sara Pinborough creates incredibly realistic characters. She does this quickly with no wasted words and yet they grow skin and hair and warts and all sorts of features page by page. And her plotting is always clearly leading you one way while the truth is in another direction - even when you know her style and know thats whats happening - but the approach is so deft and subtle that it is never heavy-handed.

This story is tough to read in several places. There is one scene in particular where I almost had to stop. This was true horror because it grabs your guts but lacks any supernatural aspect at all. But keep going. Its worth it.
After BEHIND HER EYES I thought that there was nothing Sarah Pinborough could do to surprise me. I thought that I would have all my grounds covered. I’d know.
I was wrong.
I honestly wasn’t expecting this.
If you’re planing on spending any time at the beach this summer bring CROSS HER HEART with you. Hell, if you can read at all read this book. It’s full of hidden treasures great characters, intriguing, thoughtful plot and a surprise ending.

My Thoughts From the first pages of Cross Her Heart, we can sense something that regularly niggles at Lisa, our MC. Some dark secret from the past that she has tucked away carefully, which makes her seem overly obsessive about some things. Her teenage daughter Ava resents how carefully her mother guards her, as if danger lurks.

When her dark past is revealed after photos are shown in the news, we are still not completely sure about those secrets. Throughout the story, I felt there was a lot more to the past; secrets even Lisa kept to herself back then. Some events she doesn’t even remember clearly. As we rapidly turn the pages, going back and forth in time, we learn more about what really happened all those years ago…and what someone is doing to torture Lisa in the present.

Now she must find the secret tormentor, someone she believes is out there, despite the evidence that suggests otherwise. What will Lisa do to finally put the past to rest? How will her BFF Marilyn help her?

I loved how the characters fought for the truth…and for peace with the past. 5 stars.

Sarah Pinborough is a master at the slow reveal of truths/secrets.
The story is of 40 years old Lisa. She's a little strange. She has her issues and she has her secrets. She's the single mother of 16 year old Ava. Ava is at that age where she thinks parents are weird, clingy, and she thinks she knows better than her mother. We've all been there. But Ava has secrets too.
Things from Lisa's past start to show up. This disturbs Lisa and makes her super anxious and a wee bit crazy feeling.
Then lets also mention Lisa's BFF, Marilyn. Oooh Marilyn. I feel like at first Marilyn is your typical thriller/mystery character but she blooms into a beautiful treasure within the pages. She also has my favorite quote of the book.
