When Mandy meets Quinn Douglas, she thinks he’s awful – serious, stern, and hopelessly old- fashioned. She has absolutely no interest in him, but after events throw them together several more times, she changes her mind and they start seeing each other.
Mandy relishes her independence but Quinn, a viscount from a titled Scottish family, is not used to having his authority questioned. Mandy knows nothing about his position or his family, but she does quickly learn that dangerous behavior or a bad attitude won’t be tolerated. Being held to account is new for Mandy, who soon learns just how painful a trip over a strong Scotsman’s knees for an old-fashioned lesson can be.
Quinn’s family is dead-set against the developing relationship, and once Mandy finds out who Quinn really is, she herself has doubts about such a different lifestyle.
Can two people from such opposite backgrounds find a future together?

Like other reviewers, I assumed from the title this book would be a historical romance, but I was pleasantly surprised by the contemporary setting. Quinn's stern and sexy Scottish demeanor makes him the perfect hero. (It also helps that he has enough money to make all of Mandy's problems disappear.). I thoroughly enjoyed these characters and found Quinn's little sister to be a lively addition to the cast of characters. My only criticisms are that Mandy's withdrawal when the setting moved to Scotland seemed out of character for the fiesty Texan, and I thought her bonding so quickly with her new found Scottish Grandfather was bit forced and unrealistic. That being said, neither of these things detracted that much from the story and Mandy returns to her feisty nature by the end. I am definitely going to read the next installment to see how this relationship continues to develop. (I am hoping that Maisie finds a gentleman to take her in hand in the near future.) First let me start by saying that when I read the title, I assumed this was a historical novel and nothing in the blurb made me think anything differently. However, this is a contemporary novel. And I would specifically call it a chick lit rather than a more traditional romance. The actual love between Quinn and Mandy develops quite quickly but there are other things that cause them issues along the way. Overall a sweet romance but to be honest it didn't really standout for me in any particular way.

I really enjoyed reading this story by a new author (at least for me), Laura Hart. It is a sweet love story about two people who meet quite by accident and then proceed, in a very realistic manner, to develop a relationship based on mutual wants and needs. That there is a huge difference in their cultural and class backgrounds is key to the plotline. Mandy is a young Texas girl who has grown up without a father and with a mother who seemingly never really wanted her around. She has had to fend for herself forever. Quinn is a Scottish peer, who has kept the fact that he is the next in line to become the Earl of Morleton from Mandy so as not to scare her away. As his love of Mandy grows, Quinn recognizes that getting his family, the Earl in particular, to accept a non-peer as his life partner will be exceeding difficult if not downright impossible. This story very clearly demonstrates the snobbery and defacto prejudices of the aristocratic elite. It also deals with the exact opposite, the insecurity and feelings of inferiority that commoners have when dealing with aristocrats. The story deals with overcoming all of the aforementioned issues in a realistic and believable manner. It is truly a ROMANCE novel, with a few disciplinary spankings strategically mixed in. Those punishments are severe, and not for the faint of heart. There is sex as well, not of the graphic nature but more of the sweet and sensual variety. A romance lover’s dream book, with the promise of more to come. 4 well earned stars.

I found this story to be very well-written, with great character development and an interesting plot. I thought it was going to be a historical story, because of the description, but it takes place in modern-day American. Mandy was a great character - independent, feisty, and determined to do things her way. Quinn was a bit difficult to get to know - and I had some issues with how he dealt with Mandy. I felt he was much too harsh in his punishments - especially considering he punished her the first time for not being truthful, but he held back some very important information for a long time! I felt I had to give this book a 4 instead of a 5 because Mandy's character changed completely once they got to Scotland. She was no longer feisty and independent, but hesitant and unsure. And the problem wasn't Mandy - it was Quinn. He said he was willing to deny his birthright for her, but the minute she was on his soil, he treated her differently. He expected her to conform, and when she didn't, he punished her. I found it very frustrating that he had said he loved her for who she was, yet he didn't appreciate or try to encourage those qualities once they arrived in Scotland. I do hope that is addressed in the next book. I'd love to see the feisty Mandy back...and hopefully see that she can change Quinn's staid family a bit! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
